After Alexander crossed the Hellespont, the Persian satraps of Asia Minor rallied their available forces on the banks of Granicus River in May/June 334 BC in order to prevent his further advance. Alexander moved against them and, despite the advantage of the enemy in numbers, he managed to suppress them.
