The earliest references to a bandon and a doukas of Palaiomatzouka date to the early 15th century; previously, until 1384 at least, the area of Palaiomatzouka is mentioned as a village of the bandon of Matzouka. It appears, therefore, that the bandon of Palaiomatzouka emerged from a later division of the bandon of Matzouka and that the formation of another bandon at the south fringes of the Empire of Trebizond aimed at providing for the better organization of border defences. |

The bandon of Trebizond was an administrative division covering a small area around Trebizond. Due to its key position, the most important events of its history are connected with the historical fate of the city and the Empire of Trebizond. It is reported on a chrysobull of Alexios III Grand Komnenos (1386). It is not certain whether that late reference corresponds to a pre-existing division of the theme of Chaldia in the Middle Byzantine period. |

L’invasion seldjoukide fait perdre les deux tiers de l’Asie Mineure,... |
