Constantine Gabras, strategos of the Theme of Chaldia from 1118 until 1143, built a church in Trebizond in honour of his uncle Theodore Gabras, martyred by the Seljuks in 1098. The building is reported to have been a monastery, according to a chrysobull (imperial decree) sent by Alexios III Grand Komnenos to the Venetians in 1364. The earliest preserved Byzantine church in the city of Trebizond is the Church of St. Anne. It was in use until 1923. As for its architecture, it is a three-aisled, barrel-vaulted basilica of the Middle Byzantine period. The church was actually rebuilt c. 884/885. Its interior is adorned with wall paintings covering the period between the 12th and the 15th century, although they have not been preserved in good condition. |
