SUMMARY
Dionysios Kalliarchis was a prelate of the Orthodox Church who functioned as metropolitan in Larissa and Ephesus. He had good relations with important representatives of the Modern Greek Enlightenment, such as Konstantinos Koumas and Veniamin Lesvios, and supported the Academy of Cydoniae and the Philological Gymnasion of Smyrna against the attacks of the conservative ecclesiastical circles. He was executed by the Ottomans at the beginning of the Greek War of Independence, shortly after Patriarch Gregorios V. |
