SUMMARY
Bessarion was born around 1400 in the city of Trebizond of the Pontos. He studied in Constantinople and Mystra. In 1437 he was consecrated metropolitan of Nicaea. Because he supported the idea of the Union of the Churches, in 1440 he was forced to leave Byzantium and settle in Italy, were he became a prominent scholar, a patron of classical learning and a hierarch with rich ecclesiastical and political activity. In 1463 he was elected Latin patriarch of Constantinople. He died on November 18th, 1472, in Ravenna.
