SUMMARY
The Temple of Artemis at Sardis, the fourth largest Ionic temple in the world, is a creative experiment in Greco-Roman architecture. The temple is well preserved in terms of its overall structure. The gneral layout must have been conceived during the 3rd century B.C. The laying out of the peristyle colonnade was undertaken, in all probability during the Hadrianic era. In the Roman imperial era the cella was divided into two chambers and the temple incorporated the Imperial Cult. |
