ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ
George Akropolites (1217-1282) was one of the most important scholars of his time. He was born in Constantinople and became a member of the court of the emperor of Nicaea, John III Vatatzes. He assumed high administrative and education offices and participated actively in the most important events, both military and political ones, of his era. He played an important role in the Arseniatic dispute and participated, as a representative of Michael VIII Palaiologos in the second Council of Lyon (1274) for the Union of the Churches. Due to his pro-union attitude, in 1283, after his death, anti-unionists burned most of his writings. His most important work preserved, Chronike Syngraphe («Χρονική Συγγραφή», Annales), is a notably objective and reasonable historical account covering the period 1204-1261,. |
