ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ
In the centre of modern Iznik stands the half-ruined church of Hagia Sophia (Aya Sofya Camii). It is an impressive Early Christian three-aisled basilica; it had probably been the metropolitan church of the city of Nicaea, and it housed the Seventh Ecumenical Council. During the Middle Byzantine period it was extensively rebuilt, and those transformations have given it its present appearance. |
