The Church of the Dormition in Nicaea, which served as the katholikon of the Monastery of Hyakinthos, had remarkable mosaic decoration. The church was completely destroyed in 1922. However, the photographs from the early 20th century permitted the research on the mosaics. Scholars have maintained their interest until today as the mosaics are a very important example of the art before and immediately after Iconoclasm as well as of the monumental art of the 11th century. Before the final destruction of the church there were mosaics only on the apse, the bema, the south side aisle and the narthex. |
