The sculpted decoration of the altar of Pergamon was brought to light during the excavations carried out in the late 19th century and is today kept in Berlin. The monument measured 36.44 x 34.20 m and stood at the Acropolis, to the south of the temple of Athena and the theatre. Both friezes are adorned with scenes from the Gigantomachy (Battle of Giants) and the life of the local hero Telephus. The altar was probably constructed between 179 and 133 BC. |
