ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ
Roman-Asia Minor style theatre, made of marble. Large in size it had a capacity of 15,000 spectators. It faces south and is centrally located in Side (Selimiye, initially Eski Antalya), in the province of Pamphylia. In the site pre-existed probably a Hellenistic theater, on which the building of the imperial era had been erected. It is dated to the middle of 2nd Century AD, while it was rebuilt during the 3rd century when it was transformed into an arena for amphitheatrical games. In the 4th century it was used as an open air sanctuary, while restorations were also made to the monument during the Byzantine times (5th century). It is considered one of the best preserved theatres of Asia Minor. |
