1. Bishopric of Briulla Briulla, a city to the northeast of Antioch on the Maeander, was a bishopric of the province of Asia and was subjected to the metropolis of Ephesus. Bishops of this city participated in the Third Ecumenical Council (Ephesus, 431), the (Chalcedon, 451) and the Seventh Ecumenical Council (Nicaea, 787) as well as in the councils of 1167 and 1216. In the of the Middle and the Late Byzantine period Briulla ranks 10th or 11th among the bishoprics of Asia (in a total of 34 to 39 bishoprics). The see is also reported as bishopric of Briula, bishopric of Bryul(l)a and bishopric of Bryelon. The bishopric of Briulla of the valley of the Maeander River, modern Bilaro, is not identified with the namesake parish of the metropolis of Smyrna (Ambriulla, Briulla, modern Urla), which was claimed in 1387 by the metropolis of Ephesus, by reason of the synonymity.1 |
