ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ
Theodore II Lascaris, son of John III Vatatzes, was born in 1222 and died in 1258. As Emperor of Nicaea (1254-1258), he managed to maintain the empire’s territorial integrity and favored the rise of local lineages in the state's administrative hierarchy at the expense of the aristocratic families of Constantinople. A scholar and prolific writer, he was the embodiment of the ideal of the philosopher-king; he contributed greatly to the flowering of the letters and the sciences, and rendered Nicaea the most important Greek-speaking cultural centre of the time. |
