Bishopric of Colophon

1. Bishopric of Colophon

During the Byzantine times, Colophon, a city to the northwest of Ephesos, was a bishopric see in the province of Asia, subjected to the metropolis of Ephesus. According to the notitiae episcopatuum of the Middle and Late Byzantine periods, the bishopric of Colophon ranked 27th or 29th among the bishoprics of Ephesus (in a total of 34 to 39 bishoprics). The bishopric has been known since the first half of the 5th century, since bishops of Colophon participated in the Third (431) and the Fourth (451) Ecumenical Councils.1
