SUMMARY

Perge was one of the most powerful cities of Pamphylia in antiquity. According to mythological tradition, it was founded by Achaeans after the end of the Trojan War. In 334/3 BC the city was subjugated to Alexander the Great, while in the years of his Successors it became the bone of contention between the Seleucids and the Ptolemies. In 190 BC Perge came under the kingdom of Pergamon and later under the Romans. In the Imperial period the city reached its heyday, as evidenced by its extensive remains.
